Nicole Richie "won't" try any of her friends' skincare recommendations because of her complexion struggles.

The 44-year-old fashion designer learned at a young age that using too many products can trigger her rosacea, so she tries to keep her routine as simple as possible and sticks with what she knows works for her.

She told People magazine: "It's really just about keeping [my skin] calm and not irritated.

"And so I have a big skin routine just in the sense of just making sure my skin is healthy, moisturized, taken care of, hydrated.

"I have to take a less is more approach with my skin. I do what works for me instead of gathering and following all the stuff that everyone else does.

"If my friends are saying, 'Oh my God, you have to try this product,' I just won't do it. I just don't."

Nicole also struggles with dark spots, but knew they would be inevitable as she got older because she loves being out in the sun.

She said: "I love the sun. I simply don't stay out of it. I knew one day I was going to get them [dark spots] and I told myself, 'Nicole, you deserve this. So just deal with whatever comes your way."

But after partnering with Eucerin to promote their new Radiant Tone collection, she has been very impressed with the results.

She said: "I'm using the dark spot serum every night right now.

"[I saw results in] "a couple of weeks, but I think that's really good. I think it evens out your skin, so it's not so spotty...

"[The eye cream has] really done wonders on having the complexion of my skin be consistent and not so spotty. It's very good."

"I've been using Eucerin for a very long time on my body. It's a trusted brand, a brand that runs deep in my family."

Just as with skincare, Nicole tries to keep her make-up routine as simple as possible and thinks having good skin is essential.

She said: "I think for someone like me who doesn't wear a lot of makeup all the time, having healthy skin feels like my beauty flex of the night.

"I think that [skincare] plays a much bigger role in beauty than people even give it credit for."
