Girls' Lena Dunham in disbelief that she is a mom
Girls creator Lena Dunham and her husband, Luis Felber, welcomed a baby girl via a surrogate.
Lena Dunham is loving life as a mom.
On Wednesday (16.09.26), the Girls creator and her 40-year-old husband, musician Luis Felber, announced they have welcomed a baby girl, via a surrogate, in an op ed for Vogue magazine.
And a day later, a source told People that Lena, 40, "can’t quite believe" she has a child after having had a hysterectomy in 2017 because of the pain from her endometriosis.
The insider added: "It still feels surreal to her. Every day, she has these moments when she looks at her daughter and can’t quite believe that she’s finally here.
"Lena has wanted this for such a long time, and she’s just so beyond grateful."
They went on to say that Lena and Luis are enjoying bonding time with their bundle of joy at home, before noting: "Lena’s the happiest. Friends are showering her with congratulations, love and gifts. She feels incredibly supported."
As well as sharing a picture of herself and Luis with their newborn in the op ed for Vogue magazine, she told her daughter: "Hello... I’m your mama. You… you look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come."
Lena revealed that her daughter, whose name has yet to be revealed, made her big entrance into the world late.
She wrote: "13 days late, in the face of a solar eclipse and a meteor shower, she announced herself.
"I sat on a hospital bed, between the legs of a woman I hadn’t known a year ago, waiting for a glimpse of this person who I had been waiting for with something related to patience, but also none at all."
The Too Much creator added that while she had expected to feel jealous of her surrogate, she instead went through some very different emotions.
Lena mused: "The feelings I thought would be there somehow weren’t: namely jealousy, that this woman could do for a child - for my child - what I could not. Carry her safely in her body, use her form to feed and house her, regulate the baby’s ever-evolving nervous system with steadiness, heart, and breath.
"Instead, I felt a different kind of jealousy - toward said baby, for the chance to be tucked into someone who radiated such safety. I could just tell she knew how to steer an SUV in the snow."
The baby’s arrival comes after Lena underwent a hysterectomy in 2017, aged 31, in her battle against endometriosis.
Speaking about the operation in an interview with The Times in July 2025, she said: "It was a grief, but it was also a relief. I thought I would have the opportunity to experience my fertility and my cycle waning, and it never was."
Lena also hinted that she and Luis, who have been married since 2021, were looking into different ways of having children, adding that she and her husband were "in the process of expanding our family in new ways".
