Sony has confirmed that the release date for the PlayStation 6 has not yet been decided, with ongoing supply challenges making it difficult for the company to finalise its next-generation hardware plans.

The company's CEO Hiroki Totoki discussed the future of PlayStation during an interview with The Wall Street Journal, where he highlighted the impact of the global manufacturing environment, including rising memory costs and ongoing trade tensions.

The executive explained that Sony needs to adapt to the changing technology landscape to remain competitive, particularly as demand for advanced components continues to increase.

Totoki said: "Considering that importance, we need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape."

The PlayStation 6 has previously been tipped for a 2027 launch by industry analysts and insiders, but Sony has reportedly not committed to a specific release window internally.

According to The Wall Street Journal's piece: "Totoki said the company still hasn’t fixed a date for PS6’s launch."

The uncertainty comes as the technology industry faces a shortage of memory components, driven largely by demand from artificial intelligence companies building large-scale data centres.

Rising costs have already affected current-generation gaming hardware, with Sony increasing the price of PlayStation 5 consoles in several regions.

Totoki previously addressed the PS6 during a Sony financial briefing in May, saying the company was monitoring market conditions before deciding on launch timing and pricing.

He said: "We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices. So we would like to really observe and follow the situation."

Rumours surrounding the PS6 have continued to circulate, with some industry insiders claiming Sony could launch multiple devices, including a dedicated handheld system alongside traditional console hardware.

Recent comments from Sony Interactive Entertainment president Hideaki Nishino have also fuelled speculation that the company is exploring new ways to deliver PlayStation experiences beyond a traditional living-room console.

Sony’s move away from physical game discs could also influence the PS6’s design.

The company has announced plans to stop producing new PlayStation game discs from 2028, leading some analysts to suggest the next console may focus entirely on digital distribution.

Analyst Piers Harding-Rolls believes the PS6 could arrive towards the end of 2028 and suggested that removing physical media support could help Sony reduce manufacturing costs.
