NSYNC star Joey Fatone admits it's 'not an easy life' in a boyband
NSYNC star Joey Fatone has confessed it's "not an easy life" being in a boyband as he prepares to lift the lid on the dark side of fame in his new documentary Boy Band Confidential.
NSYNC star Joey Fatone has declared it's "not an easy life" in a boyband.
The 49-year-old singer - who was a member of the group from 1995 until 2002 and joined their reunion between 2023 and 2024 - is lifting the lid on the dark side of fame in his new documentary Boy Band Confidential which features confessions from fellow pop stars including his NSYNC bandmate Lance Bass, former 98 Degrees member Nick Lachey and Backstreet Boys star AJ McLean.
Joey admitted making the film felt "therapeutic" because so much happened behind closed doors. He told New York Post column PageSix: "[The] pressure [can] build up [and then] one day it’s either [someone] explodes, or [falls into a] depression, and then that could lead to possibly suicide or addiction or whatever the case may be."
He added: "It’s not an easy life, it’s not an easy thing to go through."
Joey went on to liken being a former boyband member to being in a "fraternity", adding: "We all have something in common. It’s amazing to see how strong these guys are ...
"We interviewed each person for about four or five hours. It was very intense [at] certain times because we had some of the guys break down."
Boy Band Confidential airs on April 14 on ID and will be streamed on HBO Max.
It comes after Joey admitted he wanted to reinvent himself after NSYNC split in 2002.
When asked how the break-up "forced" him to change direction in his career, he told Rolling Stone magazine: "Well, thank God it didn’t force me. I wanted to.
"It wasn’t like, 'Oh damn, I’m out of a job. What have I got to do?' It was more or less... 'These doors are opened. Let’s see if I can walk in. I may suck, but let’s find out.' "
Joey chased a career on stage, and he noticed people's perception of him changing as he got more experience.
He added: "I always wanted to do Broadway. Right after NYSNC, I did Rent on Broadway. I did Little Shop of Horrors on Broadway.
"And then when I did Dancing With the Stars, people saw my personality. People were like, 'Oh, he’s not just a guy from NSync. He’s actually a person that actually acts.'
"It was interesting, the path that I had to go through, but it was amazing."
