The actor, 71, known for roles in film and television including Lizzie McGuire, died on 23 February aged 71 by suicide, and documents obtained by TMZ now show Robert has been cremated, with plans for his ashes to be scattered in the water.

The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office previously confirmed Robert’s death was caused by a brain injury resulting from hanging.

Robert’s family later issued a statement describing his long struggle with bipolar disorder and urging greater awareness of mental health.

They said in a statement: “It is with profound sadness that we must share that our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother Robert Carradine has passed away.

“In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon of light to everyone around him.”

The statement continued: “We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby’s valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with bipolar disorder.

“We hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness.

“At this time we ask for the privacy to grieve this unfathomable loss. With gratitude for your understanding and compassion.”

Robert had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder after the death of his brother David Carradine, who died in 2009 aged 72.

In the weeks before his death, Robert had been preparing to begin work on a film project titled The Driver.

Director Connie Lamothe told the Daily Mail Robert had been expected to play the mafia crime leader Antonio Politano in the production.

She said: “The last conversation was positive and upbeat.”

The filmmaker added Robert had spoken with members of the production team in mid-January and appeared ready to begin work.

Connie said: “There was nothing that suggested otherwise.”

Robert was part of a prominent acting family and had worked in film and television for decades.

His daughter Ever Carradine, 50, is also an actor.

She was born during Robert’s relationship with actor Susan Snyder.

Robert later married Edith Mani and the couple had two children, Marika Carradine and Ian Carradine.

Robert and Edith were married for 25 years before divorcing.
