Google ‘to bring Android to PC through new Aluminium OS with AI at its core’
Google is reportedly preparing to replace ChromeOS with a new AI-centric, Android-based desktop platform called Aluminium OS, bringing Android to PCs and setting up a long-term transition away from ChromeOS.
Google is reportedly going to bring Android to PCs throught new software known as Aluminium OS.
According to Android Authority, the platform - internally said to be called ALO - surfaced via a now-removed Google job listing, which described it as “a new operating system built with AI at the core”.
That AI-first positioning aligns with Google’s broader platform strategy and its recent partnership with Qualcomm, announced at Snapdragon Summit, to build a converged mobile-desktop computing layer powered by next-gen AI silicon.
The supposed OS marks the culmination of a plan that’s been quietly forming for more than a year.
Last year, it was reported that Google intended to unify ChromeOS and Android to streamline development and create products that could more directly compete with the iPad and Windows laptops.
Google confirmed the strategy in July, noting it would merge both platforms into a single software stack.
Aluminium OS is supposedly the result - an Android-based system designed for laptops, detachables, tablets and even set-top-box-style hardware, spanning entry-level to premium devices.
However, ChromeOS repoertedly won’t vanish overnight, as Google is said to be planning to manage a mixed portfolio of ChromeOS and Aluminium OS products during a transition period while ultimately preparing to phase ChromeOS out.
If Google succeeds, Aluminium OS could finally give Android a meaningful presence on PCs, where ChromeOS has struggled to scale beyond a niche despite its dominance in U.S. education.
With Android’s massive app ecosystem, deep AI integration and new ARM-based PC hardware on the way, Google is effectively rebooting its desktop ambitions - this time betting big on the operating system billions already use on their phones.
