In John McTiernan's Cold War thriller, Neill played Captain Vasily Borodin, the loyal second-in-command to Sean Connery's Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius. Although a supporting role, his warmth and humanity made Borodin one of the film's most beloved characters.
