Lex Luthor is one of the most iconic villains in comic book history, instantly recognisable by his trademark bald head.

But that didn’t matter to Gene Hackman. When cast in the role for Superman, the late actor refused to shave his head - and he wasn’t keen on wearing a bald cap either.

Instead, he pitched a different approach: Lex would wear a variety of wigs throughout the film, subtly suggesting that he was covering up hair loss rather than embracing it.
