Dolly Parton
The legendary country star set up The Dolly Parton Imagination Library in 1995, a scheme that offers a book free of charge to children from birth to age five. The 'Jolene' legend explained that she was inspired to set it up her father was illiterate and never got the chance to read as a kid. She said: "Daddy was a very smart man...but he was ashamed that he couldn't read or write. That bothered him. He felt like he couldn't learn after he was grown. I remember thinking, 'I need to do something."
