Take That enjoyed phenomenal success in the early 1990s but Robbie grew agitated about his musical input being ignored by Barlow and the group's manager Nigel Martin-Smith.
Amid struggles with addiction and concerns about his attitude, Robbie agreed to leave Take That in 1995 - before the band split up completely the following year.
Reflecting on his departure, Robbie said: "I think I was in the middle of a nervous breakdown, my first of many.
"It felt like I was in some sort of burning building and I needed to get out. That's how it felt at the time."
