His superb performance as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s 2008 film ‘The Dark Night’ won him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor - although Ledger was tragically unable to collect the award.

The actor died aged just 28 in January 2008 following an accidental overdose of prescription medications - including painkillers and sleeping pills.
