Charmed star Holly Marie Combs has retired from acting.

The 52-year-old TV star has revealed she's stepped away from show business to spend more time with her husband Mike Ryan and her three sons from her previous marriage to David W. Donoho - adding that she made the decision because the roles she was being offered had become "less interesting" as she reached her 50s.

During an appearance on The House of Halliwell podcast, Holly declared: "I’m retired."

She added of her reasons: "It was a lot of family. During COVID, we had three teenagers. Well, it was three teenagers and a preteen in the house, and it was just mayhem and chaos."

She went on to explain the jobs she was being offered in recent years had also changed, adding: "The stuff that I was getting and coming across my desk was just nothing that I was like: 'Oh my gosh, this is really great. I need to do this.'

"And being in, you know, that 40 to 50 range, the job pool gets even smaller and smaller. And I feel like the roles get a little less interesting."

She added that the acting industry is "not as bad with the ageism as it used to be" but joked none of the parts she'd been offered were "blowing up my skirt."

When asked if she misses acting, she explained: "I miss it occasionally because ... there’s those moments when you’re involved and you’re acting and you’re working that are just, I think it’s like being present.

"That’s what escapism is. And we get to escape into this different character with a different set of situations than our own life. And there is something about being in that moment that is quite peaceful, even if you’re doing something highly dramatic."

Holly went on to admit she may return to acting in the future but she is likely to wait after her youngest son graduates from high school, adding: "I’ll be sitting around with a lot more time on my hands."

As well as playing the lead role of Piper Halliwell in Charmed between 1998 and 2006, Holly also appeared in shows such as Grey's Anatomy and Pretty Little Liars.
