Ryan Reynolds "broke every bone" on the left side of his body when he was hit by a drunk driver.

The Deadpool star recalled the irony of having chosen not to drive his own car home after having a drink at a bar as a teenager, only to end up involved in an alcohol-related accident during the short walk home.

In a video for GQ magazine in which he and Wrexham AFC co-owner Rob McElhenney struggled as they were tasked with constructing IKEA furniture for GQ magazine, Ryan said: "When I was 18, I left a bar and I'd had a beer, I walked back.

"I looked at my car for a second and thought, 'I'm not gonna drive anywhere, even if it's four blocks home, absolutely not. So instead, I turned around, crossed the street and I was run over by a drunk driver.

"I got run over by a drunk driver after making a firmly positive and wise decision for a young, 18-year-old male. Spent four weeks in the hospital.

"That was the last time I 'Why God-ed?' as much as this."

Rob exclaimed: "That's the first time I've heard that!"

Ryan then went into more detail about his injuries.

He said: "Oh yeah, broke every bone in my left side. He hit me so hard, his car was not operational. Very bad. "

He then jokingly added, "I'd like to thank Dr. Meek at the General Hospital for putting me back together so kindly. Socialized medicine, he couldn't say no. That was in Vancouver..

"God was like 'I'm gonna just keep driving after eight beers... Oh look, skin-covered pile on."

The 49-year-old actor - who has four children with wife Blake Lively - previoously recalled his chaotic childhood in Canada with his parents, Tammy Reynolds and James ‘Jim’ Chester Reynolds, and his three older brothers, Jeff, Jerry and Patrick.

He said on Late Night with Seth Meyers: I’m the youngest of four boys and boy do I feel for my mom. You know, like, I really do. My dad, meh. But my mom really.”

“Do you know how many times my brothers had me exit a room not through the door?

“I was a moving target that they would use. You know cops, what they would use when they’re breaking into the place with a battering ram – that was my head. I was the ram.”

But Ryan believed growing up as the youngest of four boys made him unusually resourceful.

Ryan added: “When I was eight, I’m not making this up. I knew how to patch drywall.

“That right there says a lot. Like I knew how to literally – a hole in the wall, I could repair that in less than six minutes before my dad got home perfectly. Like spackle, sand, and paint, we’re good.”
