The 28-year-old actress was living alone while filming her upcoming movie Day Drinker and eventually had to get Spanish co-star Penelope Cruz to come to her aid because she was baffled as to why she'd attracted the attention of cops.
Speaking on the Therapuss podcast, she said: “Speaking of prostitutes, did I tell you the story about how when I was in Spain, I was working, and the police kept showing up to my apartment door?
“They thought I was the leader.
Host Jake Shane replied: “They thought you were a madam? How many girls were staying in your apartment?”
While on set, Penelope had asked Madelyn how she was enjoying living in Spain, which led to her being able to set the record straight.
The Outer Banks star recalled: “She was asking me how I liked living in Madrid … so, I was telling her ‘I love it so much, but I have to move out of my apartment because the police keep showing up, and I’m really scared, and they keep talking to me in Spanish, and I’m trying to translate, but I don’t know how."
Madelyn told Penelope the police kept “taking my passport and my information” , which the 52-year-old star was "crazy" but started asking questions about where she was living.
By coincidence, it happened to be Penelope's "first apartment building" and her "old neighbour" had called her and said: “They attract some local crime ring in Salamanca.”
Madelyn added: “They tracked it back to the building and they were coming to my apartment directly and I found out later that it was some sex ring.
She continued, “They thought I was the madam of it."
The Glass Onion actress stressed she has "no hate" for sex workers but wanted to clarify she wasn't involved in the industry.
She jokingly added: "They thought that I was their fearless leader. I wasn’t. I was their fearful leader. I was accidentally elected. I wish they would have let me know because I would have been a lot braver about it.”
