Caitríona Balfe had a "weird" fan encounter - while on the operating table.

The 46-year-old actress became a household name thanks to her role as Claire Fraser in Outlander - which she has starred in since it began in 2014 - and with the programme ending after eight seasons, she has looked back at her memorable moments but admitted she had one particular interaction with a fan that she'd rather not have gone through because she was having an operation at the time.

She told People magazine: “I think my weirdest one was an anesthesiologist who decided to start singing the theme tune to me as she was putting me under. That was a lot. She's supposed to be keeping me alive."

Caitriona found shooting her final episodes with co-star Sam Heughan incredibly emotional.

She admitted: “I cried like 20 times this season. I was like, ‘Wait, I just can't stop being emotional.' I mean, it was like this has been a humongous part of both of our lives, and everybody on the show has been a huge team … to be on something that's long. It's been like 12 years.”

The actress has kept hold of a number of souvenirs from the set of the show as a reminder of her years playing the time-travelling nurse.

She admitted: “I got a vase, and also I asked for my rings, and I got my rings … I feel like if I've gone through that many marriages [in the show], I deserve the hardware."

Caitriona previously revealed she and her castmates, including Sam, Richard Rankin and Sophie Skelton, all took time off work and threw themselves into new experiences in order to process the end of the show once filming on the final episodes was complete.

She told People magazine: "It was an emotionally taxing nine months. [Sam and I] felt so much responsibility to make it right, and everything felt heightened.

"We all went and did something right after.

"I went off and did a retreat, and [Heughan] went and climbed the Himalayas. Sophie went to Africa, Richard learned how to fly. I think we all had that initial ... I wouldn't say exorcist, but it's like that [process] of releasing it.

"All of us took some time off as well. Because I think you do — well, at least for me, I'll speak for myself — but I wanted to process it and I wanted to honour the experience of the character by letting it go, in a healthy way.

"I don't know, I think you can maybe make yourself a bit mad sometimes if you don't sit in the experience for a while."
