France has introduced a new strict age restriction on porn websites which will require users to go through strict age checks.
France has introduced a new strict age restriction on porn websites.
The country has set a new law that will require adult websites to run strict and verified age checks to prevent minors from accessing pornographic content.
Porn sites like PornHub and YouPorn will be legally required to block users if they do not verify their age with an official identity document, facial recognition software or other secure method.
The law came into effect for French and non-European sites last Friday (11.04.25) and the same rules and checks will be extended to websites based in EU countries on 7 June.
The country's audiovisual and digital communication regulator ARCOM are in charge of introducing the system and after privacy concerns, they are implementing a standard known as double anonymity where an age of a user can be checked without revealing their identity.
A spokesperson from ARCOM said: "The system strikes a careful balance between safeguarding children and respecting the privacy of adults”.
