Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin says his mercenaries will only continue to fight in Ukraine if they are separated from the Russian army.

The warlord continued his rage towards senior officials in Moscow and claimed that he is fed up with having to rely on Vladimir Putin's troops, who he branded as "clowns who turn people into meat".

Prigozhin, who celebrated his 62nd birthday on Thursday (01.06.23), also confirmed that Wagner fighters will finally withdraw from the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut next week after nine months of long and bloody battle.

The Wagner chief - who has become an increasingly vocal critic of the Kremlin's approach to the war - said: "If the whole chain (of command) is 100 per cent failed and will be led by clowns who turn people into meat, then we will not participate in it."

Prigozhin revealed that his men want to rest at camps in Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine for a month before making their next move.

He said: "It's been a tough year. Then we'll see how it goes."

The warlord - nicknamed Putin's chef for his background in the catering business - launched into a foul-mouthed tirade against the Russian Ministry of Defence earlier this week for doing "f*** all" to prevent Moscow being hit by Ukrainian drones.

He ranted: "Smelly scumbags! What are you doing? Get your a**** up from the offices you've been put in to protect this country.

"You are the Ministry of Defence. You've done f*** all in order to advance. Why the f*** are you allowing these drones to fly to Moscow? Who gives a s*** that they are flying to your homes on Rublyovka! Let your houses burn."
