Vladimir Putin has introduced a no-go zone around his lover's forest palace.

The Russian despot's gymnast lover Alina Kabaeva is said to be living in the luxury Lake Valdai bolthole - which is hidden from public view by thick tree cover - with the pair's young children.

A vast new exclusion zone, larger than the Mediterranean island of Malta, has now been enforced around the residence amid Putin's anger about the exposure of his secret life with Kabaeva.

According to the anti-Kremlin news website Meduza, the area surrounding the estate has been turned into a "specially protected natural area" and the public are banned from stepping foot into the zone.

The crackdown has been branded as an "ecological" move to protect Lake Valdai but locals are convinced that the move has been made to protect Putin's palatial hideaway from prying eyes.

One resident told Meduza: "The authorities are slowly squeezing out more and more territories."

Putin was said to be fuming about reports that the complex is being paid for by a taxpayer slush fund.

The Telegram channel General SVR claimed that "no one has seen the president so furious".

Putin reportedly told officials that "it was the FSB leadership's fault that they didn't keep a secret that was more serious than a state secret".
