A Canadian woman has pleaded guilty to sending deadly poison to Donald Trump.

Pascale Ferrier is facing up to 22 years in prison after sending the former US president a letter laced with ricin poison.

The envelope was intercepted before it could reach the White House in September 2020 and the FBI found Ferrier's fingerprints on the letter.

She is expected to be sentenced in April.

US Washington Attorney Matthew Graves said in a statement: "There is no place for political violence in our country and no excuse for threatening public officials or endangering our public servants."

Ferrier, a dual citizen of Canada and France, was arrested as she crossed the border into Buffalo, New York in 2020 and was carrying a gun, knife and rounds of ammunition.

She admitted to making the ricin, a poison made from the waste material left over from castor beans processing, at her home in Quebec.

The toxin was placed into an envelope containing a letter she wrote to the former president.

She wrote in the letter to Trump: "I found a new name for you: 'The Ugly Tyrant Clown'."

There is no known antidote to ricin and it can cause death within 36 to 72 hours depending on the dose.

Ferrier sent similarly tainted letters to eight Texas law enforcement officials at the same time and has pleaded guilty to criminal charges related to those as well.
