'I will not see you for an incredibly long time': These stars took a break from the spotlight

Ariana Grande has revealed she will be taking a "step back" from the spotlight when her Eternal Sunshine Tour ends next month.

However, she is far from the only celebrity to retreat from the public eye for a period – as this gallery shows.

Tom Holland

The Spider-Man star took a year away from the spotlight following his role in TV series The Crowded Room in 2023.

The 30-year-old actor told Extra at the time: "I'm now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was. I am excited to see how it turns out. I feel like our hard work wasn't in vain."

He is now firmly back in the limelight with starring roles in 2026 summer blockbusters The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Jennifer Lawrence

The Hunger Games actress explained in 2021 that she had opted to take some time out of the spotlight because she felt that the public was "sick" of her and that her career was suffering as a result.

She told Vanity Fair magazine: "I was not pumping out the quality that I should have. I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I'd gotten sick of me."

Leonardo DiCaprio

The Oscar-winning actor stepped back from the limelight following the 1997 movie Titanic as he wished to escape the "intense" public attention that he was subjected to.

The 51-year-old star recalled in 2016: "It was a very surreal time period. It was bizarre. I took a break for a couple of years because it was so intense. I needed to recharge and refocus."

Chris Hemsworth

The Thor star decided to take a break from acting in 2022 after learning that he had heightened risk of developing Alzheimer's disease during the making of his Disney+ documentary Limitless.

The 42-year-old actor told Vanity Fair: "I'm going home, and I'm going to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with the wife.

"I wanted to take time off because I've been working for 10 years, and I've got three kids that I want to spend more time with."

Emily Blunt

The Devil Wears Prada star, 43, announced that she was taking a temporary break from acting in 2023 to spend more time with her children.

The Oscar nominee told the Table for Two podcast: "I worked quite a bit last year and my oldest baby is nine – like we're in the last year of single digits – and I just feel there's cornerstones to their day that is so important when they're little.

"And I just need to be there for all of them. For a good stretch. And I just felt that in my bones."
