Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff has opened up on her strained relationship with parents Bob and Susan, and her sister Haylie.
Hilary Duff admits it's "devastating" being estranged from her parents and sister Haylie.
The Lizzie McGuire star recently returned with her new album luck... or something, and on the record she delves into the difficult relationship she has with her family, along with the emotional toll it has taken.
She told the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast: "I think being very vulnerable and open about what it's like to be in a family that your parents aren't together and you don't have relationships with both of your parents.
“It's devastating. It doesn't matter what age you are, you want your parents to feel like they care about you. And a big portion of my existence hasn't felt like that.”
Hilary - who penned new song The Optimist about her parents Bob and Susan Duff - recalled how her relationship with her dad was hurt by her parents' divorce in 2008.
She added: "My dad and I don't really have much of a relationship and we don't speak very often.
“It's really hard, I think, if a family breaks apart very dramatically. It's hard to find your way back sometimes—some people want to and some people don't.”
Hilary - who has son Luca, 13, with ex-husband Mike Comrie, as well as Banks, seven, May, four, and Townes, 22 months, with husband Matthew Koma — also revealed how she and Haylie "don't speak" to each other.
The 38-year-old star said: “My sister and I don't speak. In my adulthood, I've come across more and more people that are having this experience.
“And as painful as it feels to share, when I decided to make this record, I could only talk about the things that I've gone through.
"There would be no purpose to make a record after 10 years [other] than to face what it's been like. So that’s my truth."
She wrote "vulnerable" track We Don't Talk about the "very raw part of [her] existence", and while she would like to reconnect one day, it's not on the cards at the moment.
She added: "I hope it's not forever, but it's for right now."
