Christopher Kane found it “cathartic” to look back on his own work for his latest collection.

The designer – who closed his eponymous label last year – has teamed up with Self-Portrait for a one-off range, which takes inspiration from his breakout spring/summer 2007 collection, and he had a “really nice” time looking at his old creations and appreciating the details.

He told Grazia magazine: “It’s one of those collections that will stand the test of time. It was such a sit-up-and-pay-attention moment, especially in the London fashion scene.

“I never really use my own work retrospectively but it was nice to do that here.

“Han [Chong, Self-Portrait founder] loves the collection, as do I. He loves lace and this element of hyper-femininity – those are the common traits we share and it worked out really well.

“It was very cathartic and nice to go through the backstage images and to appreciate the details.

“The collection was almost like Faberge eggs. It was full on, almost over-embellished and quite vulgar.”

And Christopher is delighted that his “incredible” new designs are available at a more affordable price point.

He said: “I don’t think people knew what to expect. They’re going to think it’s candid camera.

“Dresses retail for £650 – you’re getting a lot for your buck – and they’re incredible.

“That is something we were never able to do with those first seasons at that price point.

“What Han’s done is quite miraculous, working with amazing structures and facilities in Asia that let us create pieces that you can actually afford.

“People are going to freak out.”
