Christopher Lee’s Dracula stars in Halloween Horror Special auction of vintage film posters at Ewbank’s

A chilling catalogue of classic Horror movie posters comes up for sale at Ewbank’s Auctioneers on Halloween, with Christopher Lee’s Dracula looking to raise the bloodiest bids.

The Surrey, UK auction house, which has specialised in Vintage movie posters for years, promises a feast of gore on October 31, starting with a 30 x 40in British Quad poster for the Hammer Production Dracula A.D 1972 (1972), designed by the leading poster artist Tom Chantrell.

Starring horror movie legend Christopher Lee, who went on to play Sith Lord Count Dooku in Star Wars and evil wizard Saruman in The Lord of the Rings, the feature comes from the later run of Dracula classics featuring the iconic horror stars. The estimate is £900-1,200.

A British Quad for Taste The Blood Of Dracula (1970), another Christopher Lee movie, carries hopes of £600-1,200.

The all-time spoof horror classic is Carry On Screaming (1966), and another British Quad designed by Chantrell promises to bring in the bidders with a guide of £800-1,100.

One of the most popular slasher horror franchises started with Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), and a British Quad by the great Graham Humphreys is pitched here at £600-800.

Phantom of the Opera and The Blob

While the Lloyd Webber musical has somewhat taken the chilling edge off the Phantom of the Opera over the years, the original 1962 remains a classic of the horror genre, starring the late Herbert Lom, who went on to much wider fame in the Inspector Clouseau movies. A British Quad for the movie with artwork by Renato Fratini offered here has a guide price of £350-500.

One of the great B-Movie kitsch horror features of the 1950s was The Blob (1958), supplying an early starring role for Steve McQueen. A British Quad, with suitably shlock artwork comes to the rostrum here with expectations of £250-350.

Christopher Lee complemented his Dracula franchise with a co-starring role in one of the most admired horror movies of the early 1970s, The Wicker Man (1973). Here a 40 x 27in British One Sheet displaying its breath-taking climax is expected to sell for £200-300.

Arguably the most successful of recent horror spoofs has been Simon Pegg’s dystopian vision of suburbia, Shaun of the Dead (2004). A limited edition variant edition Screen Print, measuring 36 x 24 inches and hand numbered 78/175, has a come and bid price of £250 - £300.

Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey took the starring role in the 1990 feature I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle. A British Quad for the movie provides an attractive option for anyone hoping to start building a collection, or simply looking to decorate their wall, with its estimate of just £80-120.

At the same estimate if a double bill British Quad for The Fog (1980) / A Man a Woman And A Bank (1980), The Fog starring the late Donald Sutherland, who had completed the classic horror Don’t Look Now just seven years earlier.

Eraserhead (1977) built a cult following rarely matched by any other offbeat film of the period and helped establish David Lynch’s reputation as a director with a difference. A British Quad showing the quiffed head of the lead character Henry Spencer – one of the most iconic images of the Punk era – has a guide of £180-220.
