Matt Damon's wife suffered brain aneurysm
Hollywood actor Matt Damon has revealed his wife Luciana underwent brain surgery in secret a week before the Academy Awards in 2024 and he's hailed her "heroic" for accompanying him to an Oscars afterparty as she was recovering from the operation.
Matt Damon's wife suffered a brain aneurysm and underwent surgery a week before the Academy Awards in 2024.
The Odyssey actor, 56, had been expected to attend the glitzy event in Los Angeles that year as his film Oppenheimer had received 13 nominations, but he skipped the ceremony he's now revealed his partner Luciana was recovering from a major health scare at the time.
In an interview with GQ magazine, Matt explained he previously missed the Oscars when his movie The Departed won four awards in 2007 including Best Picture and Best Director for Martin Scorsese, saying: "I remember I was shooting second unit for The Bourne Ultimatum during that Oscars [where The Departed won], so I didn’t go.
"I was living in Miami at the time, and I had an infant. [My wife] Lucy [Luciana] and I were laying in bed watching it and so nervous for Marty. And then when he won, I was jumping up and down in the bedroom and I remember being really excited.
"And then the next category was best picture, and The Departed won. And I realized in that moment I hadn’t even considered that that could happen.
"And I turned to Lucy and I was like: 'S***, we should be there!’ And then the next few weeks, I got all these calls from all the cast and the studio, like: 'Hey, where were you, man?’ I totally blew it."
Matt then revealed he missed his next big turn at the Oscars for Oppenheimer because Luciana was recovering from brain surgery, but he hailed her "heroic" for accompanying him to an afterparty so he could revel in the film's success.
He told the publication: "The next time that that happened was on Oppenheimer and we had this whole scary thing happen where my wife had a brain aneurysm.
"She’s totally fine, thank God, but [she] had this brain surgery the week before the Oscars.
"But it was the first night she felt good enough to get up and had her energy back. And she surprised me and got a dress and we went out to the after-party, because she remembered that the last time it happened, I didn’t do it.
"And she was like: 'This time we’re going out.’ And it was pretty f****** heroic of her to do that and really meaningful."
