Keira Knightley is living her 'mafia boss' dream in Netflix series
Keira Knightley has opened up about finally having her "Godfather moment" in Black Doves.
Keira Knightley is delighted to be living her "mafia boss" dream in Black Doves.
The 41-year-old actress has returned for a second season of the Netflix drama, and she has joked that playing undercover spy Helen Webb might be the closest she can get to her teenage goal of being in a Godfather movie.
She told the Metro newspaper: "Partly I love Helen because if I imagine the kind of character that I wanted to play as a teenager, Helen is it.
"I think she's as close as I'm ever going to get to a mafia boss, and I was totally obsessed with The Godfather when I was a teenager.
"I'm like, this is my Godfather moment."
Keira also admitted the character lets her "feel very powerful", which isn't an everyday occurrence.
She added: "I love that she's as powerful as she is. I love the moral ambiguity of her, and that she's rock hard.
"She's fun. I like inhabiting her. She makes me feel very powerful, which is nice. It's nice to feel powerful. It doesn't happen very often."
Keira is back for season two alongside James Bond star Ben Whishaw as her best friend and assassin Sam Young.
Netflix has described Helen as "a polished political spouse, devoted mother, and covert Black Doves operative", and she's struggling to keep her various roles "separate".
Her husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan) has risen through the ranks to become Prime Minister, which puts a fresh twist on her actions behind the scenes.
Writer and creator Joe Barton told Netflix's Tudum: "The risks are bigger, the information she’s stealing is bigger, and the betrayals that she’s committing against her country are bigger."
In the show, the Black Doves are a covert spy organisation trading in secrets, with operatives placed with powerful people, and the intelligence they gather is sold to the highest bidder.
Season two sees Keira, Ben and Andrew return alongside Sarah Lancashire as Mrs. Reed, Kathryn Hunter as Lenny Lines, Ella Lily Hyland as Williams, Gabrielle Creevy as Eleanor, Agnes O’Casey as Dani, and Molly Chesworth as Marie.
Joe added: "I couldn’t be more excited to delve back into the world of our murderous little spy family.
"To have so many [members] of our amazing cast returning and also being able to add some of my absolute favourite actors into the mix is such a great joy. Downing Street will never be the same.”
Black Doves is streaming now on Netflix.
