'I was like an octopus': Olivia Colman reveals her reaction to Wicker script
Wicker star Olivia Colman has joked that she resembled an "octopus" after reading the movie's script for the first time.
Olivia Colman "was like an octopus" after reading the script for Wicker.
The 52-year-old actress stars in the new film as The Fisherwoman – a spinster who gets married to the Wicker Husband (Alexander Skarsgard) – and was wowed by directorial duo Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson's screenplay.
Olivia told The Guardian newspaper: "You get sent a lot of scripts that you feel you've seen before. But when I read this, I was like an octopus. I changed colour and went: 'Oooh!'"
The Oscar-winning star revelled in the way her alter ego mocks the "convention of marriage".
Colman said of her character: "She's perfectly happy with her life. It's when pushed that she says, 'I'm going to f*** this up and make a mockery of your beloved convention of marriage.'
"Then she gets this kind, beautiful creature, and suddenly the world is even more joyous."
Olivia also waxed lyrical about Skarsgard's performance in the flick.
The Favourite star said: "Alex gets very awkward with compliments.
"Well, tough, I don't think there are many people who could have got quite so much across while acting within such restrictions. It's a mark of how good you are. Sorry!"
Skarsgard, 50, admits that he thought he was "being hammy" with his performance at times because of the wicker mask he had to wear.
The Big Little Lies star said: "Because of the mask, I had to exaggerate everything and I felt like I was being hammy. Subtleties wouldn't register. Underneath that beautifully crafted suit, I was like: 'Aaah!', 'Grrr!'"
Meanwhile, Alexander recently recalled how he will "never forget" wearing full costume on the set of the movie for the first time.
He told Variety: "If it doesn't quite work, it looks like a horror film because it looks like you cut someone's face off and glued it onto your own, and that wasn't quite the tone we wanted to go for here.
"So, it was a lot of anticipation and excitement and a lot of nerves because it was like, 'Oh s***! If it doesn't work, then we're kind of screwed.'"
Reflecting on his co-star's response, the Succession actor added: "It was an incredible day that I'll never forget. Putting it on and then it helped me find the physicality of the character and then stepping out of the trailer and having Olivia outside going (gasps).
"You can see how intricate and how beautiful the work was, and the fact that once it was glued on to my face, it actually moved with my movements. It's even better than we imagined."
