Julia Louis-Dreyfus reveals that Seinfeld cast would regularly 'butt heads' on set
Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus has confessed that there was "tons" of tension between cast members on the set of the NBC sitcom.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus has admitted there was "tons" of tension on the set of Seinfeld.
The 65-year-old star played Elaine Benes on the hit NBC sitcom and explained that she and co-stars including Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander and Michael Richards would often "butt heads" during the making of the show.
Quizzed on if there was "ever any friction" on set by Kristin Batalucco on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Julia replied: "Of course. Yes. Tons."
Pressed further on the matter, the Veep star said: "Yeah. I mean, it's hard to do anything really well, and it takes a lot of work, and you're going to butt heads."
Julia stressed that the atmosphere on set was usually collaborative but acknowledged that there were "arguments" at times with series creators Seinfeld and Larry David about the proposal of ideas.
The 11-time Emmy winner also explained that there was a lot of "freedom" on set and described her experience of working with her co-stars as "just being friends together and just hanging out".
Julia clarified: "That sounds as if it was just hanging out. It was a lot of work to make the show.
"But what I mean was we were all, like, kids. And we had our own idea and (the writers) had their own idea of exactly what they wanted to do, which was not the norm at the time in terms of structured television. So I think there was an air of freedom because of that. We had a lot of fun making it."
Seinfeld, which is regarded as one of the greatest American sitcoms of all time, aired for nine seasons from 1989 to 1998 and Louis-Dreyfus says she was shocked by the programme's success.
She said: "I was so surprised at all that attention."
However, Julia revealed that she rarely watches the comedy back - even though her husband Brad Hall is a big fan.
She said: "I don't usually watch it, but you know what's really funny, and it's really sweet? My husband does.
"Sometimes he'll be laughing and he's just watching bloopers or something of mine. And I'm like, 'I can't believe he's watching that.' He loves it."
