Selena Gomez’s lawyer hits back at ‘completely meritless’ $1.2 million fraud claims
The singer and Only Murders in the Building star is seeking to dismiss allegations investors were misled about the finances, leadership and prospects of mental health startup Wondermind.
Selena Gomez’s lawyer has hit back at a lawsuit accusing the singer of wrongdoing over her mental health startup Wondermind.
The 34-year-old pop star and Only Murders in the Building star was sued alongside her mother and Wondermind co-founder Mandy Teefey, 50, former business partner Daniella Pierson, 31, and the company itself in Delaware federal court on Thursday (13.08.26), and her attorney has now branded the allegations “completely meritless” and promised to fight to have the claims dismissed.
The plaintiffs claim they were misled before investing nearly $1.2 million in Wondermind in 2022 and are seeking the return of their investments as well as damages, costs and attorneys’ fees.
Selena’s attorney Mathew S. Rosengart said in a statement to Page Six: “The allegations that Selena Gomez engaged in any way whatsoever in any purported ‘fraud’ or other wrongdoing are completely meritless, both factually and legally.”
Mr Rosengart added Selena would “vigorously defend these false allegations” and added her legal team was “indeed filing a motion to dismiss the baseless claims”.
The case was brought by Wondermind SRS 44 LLC and Bespoke Wondermind LLC, which allege they were given a misleading picture of the business when they invested in September 2022.
According to the complaint, the investors claim they were led to believe Wondermind “had the infrastructure, leadership, and resources necessary for the company to launch into a profitable, one-of-its-kind mental health and wellness platform”.
The lawsuit also accuses Selena of failing to fulfil alleged responsibilities connected to marketing the company and using her considerable public profile to help develop the business.
Among the plaintiffs’ claims are allegations that promised corporate partnerships failed to emerge and a planned Wondermind app was never developed.
The investors allege that they did not become aware of the scale of the company’s difficulties until reports about its finances and management emerged in 2025.
Wondermind had already faced reports of financial difficulties.
Forbes reported in May 2025 the company had laid off 60 per cent of its 15-person workforce after employees said they had gone weeks without being paid.
A company spokesperson attributed its problems at the time to “growing pains”.
Mandy also previously rejected allegations made about her personally in a 2025 report by The Cut.
She told TMZ: “It’s unfortunate that a few disgruntled employees with an ax to grind can spread lies about me and distort the truth. Even more disappointing that the media is willing to amplify their lies.”
Daniella has separately denied the allegations against her.
The legal dispute comes while Selena continues filming the sixth season of Only Murders in the Building, the hit mystery comedy in which she plays Mabel Mora alongside Steve Martin as Charles-Haden Savage and Martin Short as Oliver Putnam.
Production has moved to London for the forthcoming season, which follows the death of podcaster Cinda Canning, played by Tina Fey.
The new episodes feature British and Irish guest stars including David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker, Sharon Horgan, Nicola Coughlan and Peter Capaldi.
Selena first became internationally famous as Alex Russo in Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place before establishing a music career that produced hits including Come and Get It, Hands to Myself, Lose You to Love Me and Calm Down.
Her businesses have also become an increasingly prominent part of her public career, particularly cosmetics company Rare Beauty, which Selena founded in 2020.
Away from the Wondermind dispute, Selena recently celebrated her 34th birthday in Italy with her husband, music producer Benny Blanco.
The couple married in California in September 2025 after announcing their engagement in December 2024.
Benny has also just released his album Hermoso, which includes Selena and Becky G on the track Te Olvido (La La.)
The Wondermind plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial, while Selena’s lawyers are preparing to ask the court to dismiss the claims against her.
