The Motley Crue rockers have recalled doing a "s*** load" of the drug at the height of the band's success in the 1980s but during one early-morning binge, they used up their entire stash of the opiate, prompting them to look for a new high.
Speaking to Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast, Tommy recalled: “We’re like, ‘F***, dude. What are we going to do?’”
The pair then caught sight of a bottle of Jack Daniels.
Tommy continued: "[We] filled up the cap with Jack and then pulled a couple syringes, and were shooting Jack Daniel’s.
“It was at that moment where I went, ‘Okay, what is happening? We could just drink this, but we’re shooting it. This is f****** wrong. And somebody’s going to die.”
But the pair just focused on getting more intoxicated.
Tommy noted: “You could taste it, like you can taste heroin."
The rocker described the deadly drug as having an "oaky" taste.
In 1989, all four members of the band entered rehab for their individual addictions and, on the advice of their producer, they left the temptations of Los Angeles behind to record their album Dr. Feelgood in Vancouver, Canada, and hired a "band therapist" to help them stay sober - which led to things getting "complicated".
The 63-year-old drummer recalled: “We’d all get together and talk about how everybody’s dealing with this new arrangement.
“Then that opens up a whole other thing. Once you start getting into therapy with the people that you work with that are also going through the same thing, you’re learning all these other things about them and all of a sudden it’s becoming really complicated at the same time.”
Tommy has struggled to maintain sobriety for a significant length of time and admitted his biggest problem is he can't help but "celebrate" when he reaches a milestone.
He admitted: “I think three years is the longest I’ve done. I get so excited that I’m like, ‘Oh my god, dude, I’ve been sober for a year,’ and I celebrate. That’s the f****** problem.”
Back in 2023, the Girls, Girls Girls hitmaker revealed he had been sober for a year.
