Charli XCX stays away from social media because it’s “better for my brain”.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the 33-year-old singer said she has made the decision to steer clear of sites such as Instagram and Facebook for the sake of her mental health.
She said: “I have actually been a lot more offline. I don’t really look as much anymore. It’s just better for my brain.
"I know people probably won’t believe me, because I am inherently, at least in the past, a very online artist.
“But I recently have been really struggling with my mental health to the point where, if I’m being real, I’m in the worst place mentally that I’ve been in my life."
Charli has found herself hitting headlines in recent weeks due to the lead single from her new album Music, Fashion, Film.
In Rock Music, Charli uses distorted guitars and even makes the shock statement that “the dance floor is dead”.
It’s sparked speculation that the singer is reinventing herself, with some fans unhappy with that decision, but Charli said she doesn’t listen to that conversation.
She added: “The discourse is loud, and sometimes that can be very overwhelming.
“It got to a place where my anxiety was physically affecting me, and I can’t actually proceed in life like that.”
Alongside her new sound, Charli is constantly looking for new ways to connect with her fans - in a more intimate manner.
She continued: “Things have changed now. I’m interested in making things really intimate between me and my audience, and sitting down one-on-one with a person and having a conversation."
While her 2024 album Brat was a worldwide smash - and sparked the ‘Brat summer’ phenomenon - she was never planning to stick to the same sound with a followup.
She explained: “I knew when I was making it that I was never going to make that record again. It’s not creatively rewarding for me to make the same thing twice.
"All of my albums work in opposites. They repel against each other, and that's the connective tissue.”
Charli's new album Music, Fashion, Film is due for release next month (24.07.26).
