Simu Liu was "kicked in the face" while filming stunts for The Copenhagen Test.

The 36-year-old actor performed his own stunts in the new espionage thriller series, and Simu admits that he suffered some painful injuries during the shoot.

He told People: "I got kicked in the face. Yeah. Many, many, many times."

Simu accepts that suffering injuries is inevitable whenever he performs his own stunts.

He said: "When you're doing fight scenes or you are, you know, you're running full speed through a hallway and you gotta blast through three people or whatever it is, stuff's gonna happen. Stuff's gonna go wrong.

"I remember I got ... been kicked in the face, been thrown against things … and things like that [on the set]."

Despite this, Simu relishes the challenge of performing his own stunts.

The actor - who plays a Chinese-American intelligence analyst in the new series - said: "Here's the thing, probably to my own detriment, I'm way too competitive of a guy. And I think ever since I was four years old, if I see someone doing something and I think I could do it just as good or better. I always, I'm like, ‘Great. Look, get me in there. I want in.’"

Meanwhile, Simu previously confessed to being "desperate for the admiration of others" during his younger years.

Asked whether he likes who he once was, Simu told The Independent: "It’s very hard ... I don’t think I do.

"I was constantly aware of how I was being perceived. In my younger years, I was desperate for the admiration of others.

"Sometimes I would try to say or do things to capture people’s attention, but people would just roll their eyes. It would never work.

"It’s like being cool in high school. You either have it or you don’t and I most definitely did not. None of the pieces were falling where they should and I hated it. I was a sad kid."

Simu was born in China but moved to Canada as a child. And the Hollywood star previously confessed that he faced intense pressure from his parents to make the most of his opportunities.

He said: "I am not the only person who’s experienced this. Ask any child of any immigrant family if they’ve had a heated argument with their parents that sometimes got physical."
