Kevin Smith has honoured the late Shannen Doherty with a comic book.

The 55-year-old filmmaker has paid tribute to the actress - who died of cancer in July 2024 aged 53 - in Quick Stops Vol. 3, which features a cover illustration of the former Beverly Hills 90210 star and Jason Lee as their characters from his 1995 movie Mallrats and a story inside offers a sequel to the cult classic.

Illustrator Ryan Gajda shared an Instagram post with Kevin, in which he showed off the cover art and wrote: “I've been excited about mentioning this for a while... but earlier this year I drew a whole comic written by @thatkevinsmith for his Quick Stops series with @darkhorsecomics and it's out next month on Sept 24th.

“The story is a tribute to the incomparable Shannen Doherty and a continuation of the story of Mallrats based on Kevin Smith's sequel script that would have checked in on Brodie and Rene 30 years on from the events of the original.

“When I was fifteen I drank a bunch of coffee and stayed up especially late one night with my brother to watch Mallrats on BBC2 after seeing Dogma and falling in love with it. If you'd told me then that I'd be doing this now I think my brain would have exploded.(sic)"

Penguin Random House, which publishes the Quick Stops comic book series, revealed Kevin has honoured "his friend and costar Shannen Doherty with two stories" in the new book.

They explained how there is "one about Shannen’s immaculate sense of humour, and the other a requiem for her character in Mallrats, Rene."

In addition, Quick Stops Vol. 3 also features stories connected to Kevin's films Chasing Amy and Dogma.

The 55-year-old actor has spoken numerous times about his planned Mallrats movie sequel, Twilight of the Mallrats, but previously admitted he thought Shannen's death would "close the book" on the idea, though he is still hopeful.

Asked about the sequel, Kevin told Deadline: "So, with Shannen’s passing, at that point, I was like, 'Well, I guess that kind of closes the book for us.'

"But then a couple of weeks ago, my producer was having a conversation with some folks at Universal."

And he later admitted he'd love Shannen's friend Sarah Michelle Gellar to step up and take over the role of Rene.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: “Shannen’s closest friend was Sarah Michelle Gellar, and I worked with Sarah on Masters of the Universe: Revelation.

“So her being Shannen’s bestie and having already tried out for Mallrats 30 years ago next year, I would ask Sarah to step in for Shannen if there’s a possibility that we get to make Twilight of the Mallrats.

"I think that’d be personally meaningful for her on some level because of her relationship with Shannen … She’d bring Shannen’s warmth with her, and it’s maybe the next best thing to having Shannen there.”

And Sarah is open to the possibility.

On The Hollywood Reporter's Instagram post about Kevin's suggestion, she commented: "Here for this idea!!"
