Brooke Shields is adjusting to life as an "empty nester".

The 59-year-old actress - who has Rowen, 21, and Grier, 18, with husband Chris Henchy - has joked about having mixed feelings when her daughters returned home from college over the festive season.

During an appearance on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon', Brooke quipped: "I'm an empty nester. Then, they came home for Christmas. It was great, and then, I couldn't wait for them to leave."

Brooke recalled feeling "so sad" when her kids left home to go to college. But the actress has already adjusted to her new way of life.

She said: "I was so sad when they left the first time. Then, at the end of Christmas, I'm like 'Don't you have to get back to school?'"

Last year, Brooke revealed that she still slept in the same bed as her daughters.

The movie star said on 'The Jess Cagle Show': "My younger daughter just turned 18. You know, the minute my husband is on any type of work trip or gone or something, you know, they still sleep in the bed with me.

"We still watch rom-coms. They're my babies and they will never not be."

Brooke also admitted to feeling anxious about them both leaving home.

The actress - who has been married to Chris since 2001 - shared: "I've been avoiding thinking of it because people will say to me, 'Oh, you're gonna be so relieved,' and I just don't see it happening.

"I don't see it happening. I was like, 'Well, they're still gonna come back,' and by the way, the cost of just living in this city is so prohibitive anyways that it may work in my favor."
