Shawn Mendes has hinted that he thought he was "about to be a father" in a previous relationship.

The 26-year-old singer - who split from 'Havana' hitmaker Camila Cabello in 2021 after two years of dating - did not go into specifics in his latest single 'Why Why Why' but did seem to hint that at one point he thought one of his ex-girlfriends was pregnant.

He sings: "I thought I was about to be a father. Shook me to the core, I'm still a kid / Sometimes I still cry out for my mother."

The 'Stitches' singer - who has also been romantically linked to Jocelyne Miranda and Sabrina Carpenter - also details having to deal with the aftermath of a breakup in his new single, which is part of his album 'Shawn'.

He sings: "Sweating through the sheets, shakin' in bed, Visions of her naked in my head / But I went off and chose myself instead."

Shawn - who found fame on social media in his midteens and by 2020 had released four studio albums - has not commented publicly on the mysterious lyrics as yet but recently admitted that he found that working on his latest record had been "medicine" after previously feeling "complete panic" at the thought of recording again.

He wrote on Instagram: "Music really can be medicine.

2 years ago I felt like I had absolutely no idea who I was. A year ago I couldn’t step into a studio without falling into complete panic. So to be here right now with 12 beautiful finished songs feels like such a gift.

"Honestly thank god for my friends and family. Life can be brutal but having a small group of people you deeply trust to walk you through makes it so much better. I have no idea how I would have made it through the last couple years let alone make an album without you.
