Monty Don has delivered a heartfelt farewell on Gardeners’ World.

The 71-year-old horticulturist made his last appearance as the longest-serving head gardener on the series, and he used his final show to bid an emotional farewell to viewers of the BBC show.

Monty said: "From myself, Ned, and Longmeadow it’s the final goodbye. I first began presenting Gardeners’ World 23 years ago at Berryfields and we came here to Longmeadow 16 years ago and in that time things have changed.

"The garden has grown, Nigel has been and gone and Nellie and Patty. But there has been one constant factor and that has been the incredible privilege and pleasure of sharing my garden and my gardening life with you here as well as working with so many superb people.

"So, thank you. Thank you for coming on that journey with me and good luck with your own gardens in the future.

"So, for the last time. Goodbye."

Monty - who replaced Alan Titchmarsh as the lead presenter of Gardeners' World in 2003 - also confirmed that he will remain part of the presenting line-up for next year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Monty recently teased his "emotional farewell" to Gardeners' World on social media.

The horticulturist and broadcaster gushed that hosting the long-running TV show has been a "complete privilege".

Appearing in a video shared on the official BBC Instagram account with his dog Ned, he said: "This Friday will be my very last Gardeners World. It began 23 years ago, 16 years we’ve been filming in this garden with my various dogs and that’s come to an end.

"But it’s a brilliant programme as ever and it’s been a complete privilege to be part of it. So join me on Friday for the last time."

The BBC captioned the clip: "It’s the end of an era as Monty presents his final programme of this series from Longmeadow this Friday.

"Tune in at 8pm on BBC Two for an emotional farewell to a much-loved chapter of Gardeners’ World."
