Former Coronation Street and Emmerdale star Ian Kelsey was "against" the soaps' dramatic crossover special.

The one-off Corriedale episode in January left fans heartbroken as a series of crashes following Debbie Webster’s (Sue Devaney's) wedding ended in Billy Mayhew’s (Daniel Brocklebank's) minibus smashing into a car carrying Emmerdale's John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), before villain Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) deliberately trapped the Coronation Street vicar inside the burning minibus, leaving him to die.

And Ian, 59, who played Vinny Ashford in Coronation Street from 2016 until 2017, and Dave Glover in Emmerdale from 1994 until 1996, had one problem with the crossover special.

He exclusively told BANG Showbiz on behalf of Heart Bingo Online: "I was a bit against the idea, actually. Because when a Coronation Street character comes in from work and turns on the TV, do they watch Emmerdale?

"That's what I couldn't get my head around."

But Corriedale was not the only thing Ian found surprising, as he revealed the striking difference between life behind the scenes on the two ITV soaps.

Ian revealed: "On Emmerdale, there were no mobile phones and no social media. If you went and sat in the green room, which is where everybody hangs out before or after work, everybody chatted.

"I remember being on Corrie and thinking it was a lot quieter off camera. It's not that everybody's got their noses in their phones all the time, but I suppose with social media and phones, there are more things to do to relax.

"Whereas on Emmerdale, you'd either go to the pub for lunch or go upstairs and have a chat. People chatted a lot more because there weren't those distractions."

On Coronation Street, Ian's crooked businessman character Vinny teamed up with Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre) in a property scam and fled Weatherfield with the stolen cash, but later returned to face Pat's revenge, which led to him murdering Vinny and Andy Carver (Oliver Farnworth).

While on Emmerdale, the entertainer's village mechanic alter ego Dave had an affair with Kim Tate (Claire King), sparking a love triangle with her husband Frank Tate (Norman Bowler), before dying in a fire at Home Farm while trying to rescue Kim's baby boy, James.

Looking back on his storylines from the two soaps, Ian cannot recall one that has stayed with him.

He explained: "I suppose if you've been doing intense stuff, it does affect you. Even though you're faking your emotion, you're still bringing up emotion, so it does stay with you. But not for long.

"Every actor has something different they tap into to bring on the tears. Some people might not tap into anything and can just make their eyes water, then go the rest of the way. I don't have problems finding the emotion if the writing is good.

"But I can’t say something has really stayed with me."

Ian really misses being part of Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

He said: "I loved it. I really did. I loved the 12-hour days. I loved being part of a team, the crew and the friendships you form. Just being part of the whole day.

"I really miss it."
