Ella Langley makes Billboard history as Choosin' Texas matches Mariah Carey's record
Ella Langley's Choosin' Texas pulled in 19.8 million streams in the US last week as the country singer drew level with one of Mariah Carey's Billboard records.
Ella Langley's Choosin' Texas has matched Mariah Carey's record for the most weeks at number one on Billboard's Streaming Songs chart.
The 27-year-old country singer has spent 26 non-consecutive weeks at the top, drawing level with Carey's festive hit All I Want for Christmas Is You.
Billboard, the American music publication known for its industry charts, reported that Langley's track earned 19.8 million eligible US streams in the week ending 15 October, according to data provider Luminate.
That secured its latest week at number one on the chart dated 24 October, despite a five per cent drop in streams from the previous tracking period.
Choosin' Texas first topped the chart on 31 January and has returned for several spells since, including an uninterrupted eight-week run between 15 August and 3 October.
Only three songs have led Streaming Songs for at least 20 weeks since the chart launched in 2013.
Alongside Langley and Carey, Lil Nas X reached that milestone with Old Town Road, featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, which spent 20 weeks at number one.
On the separate Billboard Hot 100, which measures several forms of music consumption, Choosin' Texas remains at number two behind Taylor Swift's Patient Zero.
The track features on Langley's second album, Dandelion, and she wrote it with Miranda Lambert, Luke Dick and Joy Beth Taylor.
Speaking to Billboard at its Women in Music event in April, Langley recalled having a clear plan for the song before its chart success.
She said: "I knew it was going on the record."
She added: "I don’t think I could have ever imagined what’s happening with it right now."
The idea emerged during a songwriting retreat, when Langley asked Lambert about a pet kangaroo she had owned.
Lambert recalled being pulled over with the animal in the passenger seat and a dog in the back, mentioning that her vehicle had Texas plates.
That detail sparked a lyric and melody, and Langley said the writers finished the song in about 45 minutes.
Carey's streaming total has grown across successive festive seasons, with All I Want for Christmas Is You adding four weeks at number one during the 2025 holiday period.
