Amy Adams has admitted she can be overprotective of her daughter Aviana, but is learning to give her more freedom as she grows up.

The 52-year-old actress has daughter Aviana, 15, with her husband Darren Le Gallo, and has been trying to ease up on her protective instincts as the youngster gets older.

Speaking to PEOPLE at a screening of her new movie Klara and the Sun in New York on Monday (19.10.26), Amy said: "I'm definitely a bit of a helicopter parent."

She added: "It's been something that I've worked on as she's gotten older."

Amy described Aviana as "honest and reliable", and said communication has become an important part of their relationship.

The Arrival star also compared herself to Chrissie, the mother she plays in Klara and the Sun, explaining that she is willing to have difficult conversations with her daughter instead of avoiding uncomfortable subjects.

Amy has previously admitted that she once had fixed ideas about raising a child, but her approach changed as Aviana grew older.

Speaking to OK! magazine in 2025, she said: "I have become more patient because I learned that skill through parenting."

She has also tried to respect her daughter's privacy, explaining that she would rather share memories from Aviana's childhood than discuss details of her life as a teenager.

But Amy has a trick up her sleeve when she needs her daughter to behave.

During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers in June, the Enchanted actress revealed: "I would threaten to sing Enchanted at times."

Amy explained that the warning "only works in public", and recalled telling Aviana she would start singing at full volume if the youngster and her friends did not get down from their chairs at a Girl Scout dinner.

Aviana quickly sat down.

The teenager may even end up working in Hollywood herself.

Amy told Jimmy Fallon earlier this year that visiting the set of a Star Wars movie had sparked Aviana's interest in filmmaking.

She recalled her daughter asking if she could have a career in films, although she was not necessarily thinking about appearing in front of the camera.

Klara and the Sun, directed by Taika Waititi, stars Jenna Ortega as an artificial companion who becomes part of a family dealing with grief.
