Jeremy Clarkson is working on an "unbelievably ambitious" new show to rival The Traitors.
The Clarkson's Farm star has finished filming series six of his Amazon Prime Video programme, and he is now setting out to make an impressive new project in a bid to "stand out" from the other shows around.
Speaking to Loose Women star Jane Moore and his daughter, blogger Emily Clarkson, about TV production at the RTS Convention in London, he said: "We’re currently thinking about what we’re going to do after Clarkson’s Farm and it’s going to have to be something bigger - to stand out, to protect us from the onslaught from underneath [from new media].
"It has to be unbelievably ambitious, like, where people go, 'What the *** are you doing? That’s an incredible show!'
"The Traitors is a very good example. They get proper celebrities on that and it’s a great show."
The former Top Gear host, 66, believes the only way British TV can "survive" is if the likes of BBC, ITV, Sky, Channel 4 and Channel 5 all merge and create shows together.
He added: "Television has to get bigger, lose scheduling and get better.
"I actually think that TV in this country can only survive - and should do this - if the whole lot merge. BBC, ITV, Sky, Channel 4 and 5.
"People are draining away from the industry and it’s a huge pool of talent and I think if we had one great big thing - Britflix, let’s call it - we could all club together and make good programmes.
"But bigger, better and fewer programmes."
Earlier this month, Jeremy admitted he felt "sad" to hear Monty Don was leaving BBC show Gardeners' World.
In his column for The Sunday Times newspaper, Clarkson wrote: "Despite [my own gardening] ineptitude, I do watch Gardeners’ World and that’s why I was sad this week to hear that after 23 years, Monty is leaving the show.
"And I’m even sadder now because I’ve realised he will have to be replaced, and I have the most horrible feeling that whoever gets the gig will not be the sort of person who wears corduroy. The material of choice for anyone with a safe, gentle pair of hands."
Jeremy insisted he's worried the new host will not be hired for their gardening expertise, and claimed the show should follow The Grand Tour because all three new presenters - Francis Bourgeois, James Engelsman and Thomas Holland - are knowledgeable about cars.
He added: "As I’m sure you’ve noticed, there’s been a trend in recent years for television shows to be presented by 'characters'.
"People with regional accents who wear brightly coloured jumpers with rainbows on them. People who think that being zany is the same as being funny.
"There’s also a trend to hire people who have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about. It’s one of the things that’s made the new hosts of The Grand Tour work so well: they do."
