Michelle Ryan is working on her next project after her shock axe from EastEnders.

Last month, it was revealed that the 42-year-old actress has quit the BBC soap - just a year after she reprised the role of Zoe Slater, Kat Moon's (Jessie Wallace's) daughter, after a 20-year absence, and now Michelle has updated fans on her next job.

The star posted a headshot of herself on Instagram on Sunday (02.08.26), with the caption: "Working on my next project this summer and looking forward to sharing more soon.

"It’s been a busy stretch, so if you’ve written and are still waiting on a reply - they’re on the way."

Michelle's fans rushed to the post's comments section to express their sadness about her leaving EastEnders and excitement about her upcoming project.

One penned: "I’m so gutted about Zoe. Started watching the show again for your return! But excited to see what you do next xx (sic)."

A second supporter typed: "I can't wait to see what you are doing next I wish you all the best for your new project its been a pleasure to watch you play Zoe in EastEnders (sic)."

And a third follower wrote: "Getting rid of you and Zoe permanently is a huge huge mistake, good luck with everything you do in the future Michelle and remember we absolutely love you (sic)."

In July, it was reported that Michelle has filmed her final scenes in EastEnders, and Zoe has been killed off.

A source told The Sun on Sunday: "Michelle’s long-awaited return has been somewhat flat and lacklustre.

"There’s been a backlash about her comeback, leaving some fans disappointed with her on-screen presence.

"There has been some disappointment backstage that the return was short-lived as everyone loved the Zoe Slater’s historic moments."

Zoe’s departure will air on the soap over the coming months.

An EastEnders spokeswoman said: "We can confirm Zoe Slater will be departing EastEnders later this year. We wish Michelle Ryan all the best for the future."

Before her return, EastEnders' executive producer Ben Wadey, 32, teased how the show would examine Zoe’s complicated relationship with Kat.

He said: "She was insistent that she couldn't face seeing her mum again. But why? And why has she shunned Kat for so many years?

"Since Zoe left, we know their relationship deteriorated until Zoe cut ties completely. I've always been fascinated as to why, especially as they left on good terms.

"We have 20 years of history to explore, and so much has happened to both of them since they were last on screen together."

Michelle quit EastEnders in 2005 for Hollywood after landing the lead in the Bionic Woman remake.
