Crime drama Whitstable Pearl 'axed after three seasons'
Whitstable Pearl has been scrapped by streamer AcornTV, according to a source.
Whitstable Pearl has been axed.
The crime-drama TV series, featuring After Life star Kerry Godliman, has been scrapped after three seasons, with streamer AcornTV opting to focus its resources on other projects.
A TV insider told The Sun newspaper: "It’s absolutely devastating for everybody involved as they feel the series will be left incomplete.
"Viewers are also going to be gutted as they’ll never know if the two main characters ever get together romantically, as the ‘will they, won’t they’ storyline has been a huge part of the drama."
The series saw Kerry play Pearl Nolan, a private detective who solves crimes in a quaint seaside town.
However, the 52-year-old actress - who has also starred in Derek and Bad Move - is playing Detective Inspector Andrea Dalziel in the ITV reboot of Dalziel and Pascoe.
Kerry actually filmed the first season of Whitstable Pearl amid the COVID-19 lockdown in the UK, and she previously discussed the surreal experience of shooting the show during the global health crisis.
Speaking on Virgin Radio, Kerry shared: "I feel like it's my town now because I didn't see other people around when I was down there.
"It’s a seaside who-dunnit about a local woman who is a pretty successful restaurateur but she also dabbles in a bit of private detective work on the side. Initially it was not too challenging stuff, not that sinister and then we find her when it takes a bit of a dark turn and she finds a body of an old family friend.
"I think she's a bit scared; she's out of her depth. So there's always that sense that she's kind of flailing, a little bit naive, but she's determined."
The TV series was based on the books by Julie Wassmer, and Kerry agreed that they were ripe to be adapted for a TV audience.
The actress said: “It’s based on the books by Julie Wassmer. She's written eight of these mysteries and Acorn TV rightly recognised that it would make a fabulous television programme so they commissioned it."
