Hit BBC show The Lady Grace Mysteries is to return for a second season.

The new series of the spy stories, based on Patricia Finney’s novels about Lady Grace Cavendish’s journey through the “glittering yet treacherous world” of the royal court, will air on CBBC.

It will be back for 10 episodes, alongside three winter specials, although a release date for the programme has yet to be announced.

Each instalment is reportedly 24 minutes long, and will see Lady Grace - played by Evie Coles - on a mission to rescue Sir Francis Drake, while also encountering Mary, Queen of Scots for the first time, amid a “bold mission” to “unite the rivals”.

The series announcement comes amid a “powerful” commission of a host of new and returning series, according to Patricia Hidalgo, Director of BBC Children’s Education.

Girl Troop vs Aliens and High Hopes will be back for their respective second and third series, while Operation Ouch! is returning for a 15th season.

Meanwhile, Anisha, Accidental Detective - based on Serena Patel’s novels - has been commissioned for 10 episodes.

It will follow the protagonist as she attempts to find the truth about her aunt’s fiancé’s disappearance before their wedding in Manchester.

"This new slate is a powerful reflection of our commitment to telling stories that truly represent children and families right across the UK," Patricia Hidalgo said in a statement.

"By filming and producing in locations spanning the nation, we’re not only investing in regional talent and industries, but also ensuring our content feels authentic, relevant and rooted in the real lives of young audiences.”

Other shows to be commissioned include a “fast-paced” animated sketch show from Paul Whitehouse, which has a working title of That’s Jokes and is due to premiere this autumn.

Sarah Muller, Senior Head of Commissioning for BBC Children’s Education, added in her statement: "We’re continuing to invest in bold, distinctive storytelling that puts young audiences right at the heart of the action.

"From the return of The Lady Grace Mysteries to brand new adventures in Anisha, Accidental Detective, this slate brings together rich stories, big laughs and brilliant characters that reflect the creativity and diversity of the UK."
