Lauren Laverne reveals how sons coped with her cancer battle
Lauren Laverne was surprised by how her sons handled her cancer battle.
Lauren Laverne was surprised by how "strong, resilient and brilliant" her children were during her cancer battle.
The 48-year-old star, who has kids Fergus James, 18, and Mack, 15, with DJ husband Graeme Fisher, was given the all clear in November 2024, and she's opened up on how her sons dealt with her illness and recovery.
She told HELLO! magazine: "The kids have been absolutely extraordinary.
"They've so brave and loving, and it brought us even closer as a family. I've been so proud of the way they've handled it."
Lauren insisted that anyone in her position should trust their children to be able to cope with the situation as best they can.
She added: "It's made me determined to have honest, open conversations with the kids in an age appropriate way, so they don't get any kind of nasty surprises around the corner. Our relationship has benefited from that.
"It's really hard telling your kids you've got cancer; I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.
"But I'd say to anybody in that position: 'Your kids will surprise you with how strong, resilient and brilliant they can be.'"
Around 19 months after getting the all clear, the BBC Radio and One Show host revealed she feels "really good right now".
She said: "I feel as though I know myself - I feel really strong.
"I've been through some incredibly difficult things and I kept going. I'm really proud of that."
The Desert Island Discs host previously revealed she hoped she was a "better person now" she is cancer free.
She told Good Housekeeping UK: "One of the really big things I’ve learned is that it’s all life.
"It’s all part and parcel and texture – a real life is lots of big experiences. And the truth of that is, like it or not, going through big stuff expands your emotional vocabulary.
"I’ve learned a massive amount, and I hope I’m a better person now.
"And actually, I probably love my life more now than I did then because I appreciate everything about it.”
