Stanley Johnson is recovering in hospital after being treated for colon cancer.

The I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! 2017 campmate underwent a successful five-hour hemicolectomy to remove one half of his colon at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea, London, on June 12.

He told the Daily Mail newspaper's Eden Confidential column: "Late last year, I was having a [chest] scan and this brilliant professor, Margaret Johnson – no relation – examined everything.

"She said, 'There’s nothing wrong with your chest, but there’s something odd further down.'

"My local NHS doctor, Daniel Dietch, insisted that I should follow up on the anomaly. On Friday last week, [surgeons] dealt with this obstruction. I hope to get out of the hospital this Friday."

The former MEP, 85, said he has been "blessed with this stroke of luck" as the disease was "spotted early and dealt with quickly".

Stanley urged people to "scan when you can".

In a picture taken by his 61-year-old son, ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Stanley appeared in high spirits as he lay in his hospital bed.

The latter posted the shot on his Instagram account on Tuesday (16.06.26), with the caption: "I am enjoying a brief summer break at the Royal Marsden, destination of choice!"

When discharged, Stanley is jetting off for yet another international adventure.

The avid traveller said: "I’m off to Tibet to examine the glaciers."

Stanley's 60-year-old daughter, journalist Rachel Johnson, quipped: "My incredible father looks much better after a five-hour operation than most people less than half his age on holiday."

As well as Boris and Rachel, Stanley has sons, Conservative MP Jo Johnson, 54, and entrepreneur Leo Johnson, 57, with his first wife, the late Charlotte Johnson-Wahl.

He is also the dad of daughter Julia Johnson, 44, and son Maximilian Johnson, 40, whom he has with his second spouse, Jennifer Kidd.

In April 2020, Boris was moved to intensive care at St Thomas' Hospital, London, where he received "excellent care", after his coronavirus symptoms "worsened".

It came after he suffered "persistent symptoms" of the virus.

A statement by Number 10 Downing Street read: "The prime minister has been under the care of doctors at St Thomas' Hospital, in London, after being admitted with persistent symptoms of coronavirus.

"Over the course of [Monday] afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital."

"The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication."
