Tina Daheley quits BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show after seven years
Tina Daheley will no longer read the news on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show.
Tina Daheley has quit the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show after seven years.
The 45-year-old presenter said the newsreader role was "one of the greatest privileges of my life", but reassured fans that she would still be at the station, covering 61-year-old Jeremy Vine's show over the summer.
On Tuesday (16.06.26), Tina posted a lengthy statement to Instagram, which read: "After more than seven years of early alarm calls on Radio 2, I’m stepping away from Radio 2 breakfast.
"It’s been one of the greatest privileges of my life to wake up with you every morning, and humbling to have been trusted to deliver the news on the biggest breakfast show in Europe."
Tina then reflected on her 18 years of doing breakfast radio at the BBC, having started with her "dream job" of reading the news for 62-year-old Trevor Nelson's Breakfast Show on 1Xtra in 2007.
She continued: "My breakfast run ends on Radio 2, but it all started on 1Xtra, where I landed my dream job reading the news on Trevor Nelson’s Breakfast Show.
"From there, I spent a decade broadcasting to one in four young people in the UK on Radio 1."
Tina, who presents on BBC Breakfast and BBC News, joked that her departure means that she can finally enjoy a few more hours in bed.
The broadcaster went on: "After 18 years and six back-to-back breakfast shows (probably a record) in there somewhere, I am looking forward to a lie-in."
Tina's exit comes days before Sara Cox, 51, takes over the Radio 2 Breakfast Show as host, after Scott Mills, 53, was sacked in March.
Tina said: "Wishing Sara and her team the very best of luck. I’ll be tuning in while doing the school run."
She concluded her statement by teasing new projects.
Tina said: "I’m not leaving Radio 2, you’ll hear me between 12 and 2pm when Jeremy’s away, and you’ll see me on BBC One after the summer.
"Beyond that, watch this space."
After 1Xtra, Tina moved to BBC Radio 1, where she worked with Chris Moyles, 52, and Nick Grimshaw, 41, on the Breakfast Show.
The star then went to Radio 2 to join Zoe Ball, 55, when she took over the Breakfast Show in 2019, and Tina stayed to work with Scott, when he replaced Zoe last year.
On March 30, Scott's sacking from the BBC was announced just days after he was abruptly taken off air.
It later emerged that the DJ was investigated by police over alleged sexual offences involving a boy under the age of 16 back in 2018, but the case was closed in 2019 because "the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges".
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said in a statement to the Daily Mirror newspaper: "In December 2016, the Met began an investigation following a referral from another police force.
"The investigation related to allegations of serious sexual offences against a teenage boy. These were reported to have taken place between 1997 and 2000.
"As part of these enquiries, a man who was in his 40s at the time of the interview was questioned by police under caution in July 2018.
"A full file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, who determined the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges. Following this advice, the investigation was closed in May 2019."
It has not been confirmed if Mills' dismissal from his role at the company is linked to the previous police investigation.
The BBC said in a statement: "While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC."
