Strictly Come Dancing star Ian Waite 'surprised' by Josh Widdicombe announcement
Former Strictly pro Ian Waite has admitted he was "surprised" to see Josh Widdicombe join the show's presenting team.
Ian Waite was "quite surprised" when Josh Widdicombe was revealed as the new Strictly Come Dancing host.
The 55-year-old former pro, who appeared on the show between 2004 and 2009, has revealed his thoughts on the new-look presenting team for the BBC programme, which sees Josh, Emma Willis and Johannes Radabe replacing Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly.
Giving his thoughts on ITV's Lorraine on Monday (15.06.26), he said: "I was quite surprised when they announced Josh Widdicombe."
Ian explained that while Emma is "the perfect anchor", it took him a moment to realise where Josh would fit in.
he added: "But actually, if you think about, Claudia gave the comedy and I think he will bring that comedy part.
"And we're so excited about Johannes. It's so iconic!"
Karen Hauer, who danced with Josh on the 2024 Strictly Christmas special, recently joined those throwing their support behind the comedian.
The duo dressed up as penguins for a Charleston set to Let It Snow, and Karen insisted that routine proves the 43-year-old comedian earned his spot.
Appearing on ITV's Lorraine on Friday (05.06.26), Karen said: "He was so on board, and that's why I feel like he is awesome.
"He's gonna be absolutely brilliant, because he's been in the trenches. He knows how it's gonna feel, he knows how the person is gonna feel."
The upcoming series is taking shape, with EastEnders actress Lacey Turner, singer Delta Goodrem and reality star Dani Dyer already confirmed as the first three names on the lineup.
Dani's 2025 stint was cut short before the competition actually began due to an ankle injury during training, and she is looking forward to a chance at redemption later this year.
She said in a statement: "I am so excited to be back in the ballroom this September!
"I just cannot wait to get my dancing shoes back on and hopefully this time around I can actually make it to week one! I’m just over the moon and cannot wait to find out who else is doing it!”
