Bridgerton bosses rejected Nicola Coughlan's request for a "special cut” of the show “without any of the sexy bits" so she could watch it with her mum.

The star was told to use editing software if she wanted to remove the many steamy sex scenes that make up the hit Netflix series, which follows the titular family's eight siblings looking for love in Regency-era London's high society.

Appearing on the latest episode of the Dish from Waitrose podcast, Nicola told hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett: "I thought I had a deal where I was like, 'I want a special cut of it without any of the sexy bits, so I can watch it with my mum.'

"And they were like, ‘No one gets that. You can do it yourself, like on Final Cut Pro. We're not doing it for you.'

"Other people started messaging me like, 'How did you get that?' I'm like, 'I didn't. I thought I did.'"

Nicola's mum - who tells her daughter off "quite a lot" for doing projects containing explicit material - was outraged when she saw Jonathan Bailey's full moon in Brigerton's debut episode.

The star said: "The first episode of Bridgerton, I tried to get her to watch because I had the episodes before it came out.

"And then about two-and-a-half minutes in is the first bare bottom, Jonny Bailey's lovely bottom. But she was like, ‘I don't know why they're doing that.’

"She thought it was Downton Abbey. And I was like, 'It's not quite that. It's not that kind of its own thing.' She was like, ‘Why is that happening? Why is that?'

"But then now she's like, she loves it so much. And yeah, she gets very excited."

Series three followed the romance between Penelope Featherington (Nicola) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), which ended in the pair getting married and welcoming a son named Elliot in a flash-forward scene.

It featured a sex scene between the couple, and Nicola dodged watching the romp at the Season three Part II premiere in Galway, Ireland.

Nicola said: "I avoided that because we did a second part premiere, and there was a screening in Galway, where I'm from, and my mum was there and my sister and lots of family friends.

"But like, they were watching it on the screen, and I got to leave, and I was like, 'Enjoy, bye!' Don't want to know."
