Former Doctor Who star Alex Kingston believes it was a "missed opportunity" that her and Jodie Whittaker's characters didn't share the screen.

The 62-year-old actress last portrayed Doctor Who's River Song in 2015 episode The Husbands of River Song, and she was keen to reprise her role alongside Jodie's Thirteenth Doctor, who she portrayed from 2018 to 2022.

Speaking to WhoCulture, she said: "Jodie and I have met and we've had conversations about this, about how we felt that it was a missed opportunity that they didn't share an adventure together on BBC television."

River has still featured in other Doctor Who projects, including audio dramas and novels, and Alex has hinted River and Jodie's Doctor could appear in an "adventure storyline" in the future.

She added: "And so I'm 100 per cent sure that there's a writer somewhere who's already coming up with some sort of adventure storyline that brings the two of us together, because I think it would be absolutely fantastic and I know it's what the fans would love."

Alex would also love to see River feature alongside Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor in a Doctor Who project.

She said: "And then of course, with Ncuti's Doctor... who has the better outfit?"

When it was suggested there might be "too much naughtiness" if the Fifteenth Doctor and River were to share screen time, the former Strictly Come Dancing star said: "A lot of fabulousness... that's for sure!"

Last month, Alex hinted River could make a return to the BBC series.

When asked about a potential comeback for the character, she said on Doctor Who YouTube series The Whoniverse Show: "Of course I’m thinking ‘There’s still plenty of time for her to come back’ - how long’s a day on Darillium? [A single night on the planet Darillium lasts for 24 years].

"River could just be inside a computer; she could be a virus, go anywhere, hack into any computer anywhere in the universe, regenerate herself, 3D print herself?

"It’s endless – so just putting it out there!"
