Bel Powley has signed up for a new BBC darkly comic drama.

The Morning Show alum plays Lola, an ex-model-turned-grifter who arrives in town with trouble at her heels, in Shy and Lola.

In the six-part series, Bel, 33, stars opposite The Night Manager's Hayley Squires, 37, who plays Shy, a cleaner scraping by and dreaming of a new life in Portugal.

The show - based on the French television drama Cheyenne and Lola - follows the two very different women, who are forced to become allies when a murder gets them caught up in the criminal underworld that operates in Shy's small coastal town in the North of England.

With the unlikely duo coming together, Shy and Lola discover they share a talent for crime, and they build an operation that could defeat or overpower the local criminals.

However, the pair must decide between using their cash to start a new life for themselves elsewhere or staying put as the new leaders of the small coastal town.

Amanda Coe, 61, said the gripping drama - produced by the multi-BAFTA and Emmy award-winning company behind Netflix's Baby Reindeer, Clerkenwell Films - was a "dream" to pen.

The award-winning screenwriter-and-novelist - also known for her work on Apple Tree Yard, as well as The Trial of Christine Keeler - said: "With such a rich and spiky central relationship at its core, Shy and Lola is a dream of a show to write, full of fun, action and emotion.

"I can’t wait to see our hugely exciting cast and director bring it to life."

Further cast for Shy and Lola - which starts filming in and around Hull and Leeds this spring - will be announced in due course.

Rachelle Constant, executive producer for Clerkenwell Films - also responsible for producing The End of the F****** World - lauded the captivating writing of Shy and Lola.

She said: "Amanda has written a brilliantly bold series centred on a dynamic female duo, which blends dark comedy with propulsive storytelling. We’re thrilled to have Hayley and Bel as our leads, alongside an exceptional cast and crew."

And Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, teased viewers are "in for a real treat" when Shy and Lola airs - a date of which is yet to be announced.

She said: "Shy and Lola are an unlikely duo, the classic odd couple, who get caught up in a murder - and that’s just the start of it.

"Amanda Coe’s superb scripts will surprise and amuse viewers in equal measure, and with Clerkenwell producing and Hayley and Bel leading the cast, BBC viewers are in for a real treat."
