Clare Grogan would "never say never" to a surprise EastEnders return.

The Altered Images frontwoman played Ros Thorne - a private detective who was hired by Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) to trace his sons, Steven and Peter, who had been taken by their mum, Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) - from November 1997 to April 1998.

Asked if Clare would return to the BBC soap like other stars have done, including Tracy-Ann Oberman (Chrissie Watts), Michelle Ryan (Zoe Slater) and Karen Henthorn (Julie Bates), she told ContactMusic.com: "I really genuinely cannot imagine that ever happening.

"But I've learned to sort of expect the unexpected in life, but I do think that one is a bit unlikely. [But] never say never!"

Clare made her EastEnders debut as Ros in the November 3, 1997 episode, and later that month, her alter ego and Ian discovered Cindy - who had attempted to have Ian killed by a professional hitman in 1996 - was residing in Italy, and they followed her there.

Clare's initial contract was for "nine weeks", but she ended up staying for almost a year.

Ros - who, while hunting for Cindy, had a brief romance with Ian - made her final appearance in the April 10, 1998 episode after Cindy's arrest and imprisonment, and Ian being given custody of Steven and Peter.

Clare recalled that some of the EastEnders cast were jokingly jealous about her being sent to Lake Como, Italy, for her first scenes, as they had never been abroad.

She said: "All my first scenes were shot in Lake Como, so I flew to Italy, because that's where Cindy had disappeared with the kids.

"But I was a bit like, I just couldn't wait to get onto Albert Square, and so when I eventually got there, you know, the cast were like, 'Oh yeah, we've been on the show for years, no one's asked us to go to Italy!'

"And I was like, 'I just wanted to be in the Queen Vic!'"
